Why Link Building Matters for Your Business
It’s easy to get lost in a technical maze when we are talking about link building. For me, link building is more about the relationship between your business and another business.
Sometimes, I jokingly say “you get the best links when you don’t think about links”.
Link building is about getting another website link to a page on your website.
But you don’t want just any backlink to a random page.
The business perspective should always be present to ensure the right type of people to your different URL:s, taking the desired action.
In this article I will mention and dive deeper into some of the benefits of link building and why it should be a key focus if you want to improve your online presence.
Brand Awareness and Visibility
There are few things I genuinely love more than plants. I love the whole process of planting a seed, taking care of it, getting to know it (okay, I’m fully aware I sound like a nerd here) and see it grow and in a few months it will turn out to be a little plant.
I need something that is not AI, digital and online to stay grounded.
Why am I talking about plants in a section about brand awareness, you may wonder… The right type of backlinks, like digital PR links, can help you raise awareness for your brand.
For me, plants are kind of my thing, and when someone thinks of “Linksandmaria”, I want people to think of a happy, energetic and plant-obsessed link builder.
What I am trying to say here is that backlinks can help people understand what your brand is all about, what makes you unique and, maybe most importantly, how you differ from your competitors.
People want to do business with people they like.
Backlinks can help you sharpen your brand identity and make you more appealing and a big benefit of that is that increased awareness can lead to more referral traffic.
Targeted traffic and conversions
Getting traffic to your website is great and all, but what is that traffic really worth if it’s not the right type of traffic?
Instead of talking about “traffic”, I like to point out what it really is – people that could be potential customers.
What I’m trying to say here is that building backlinks is so much more than the technical aspect.
It’s about building relationships and ultimately converting the people visiting your website into paying customers.
When you get a backlink from a very relevant website you not only get a backlink, you get a vote from another business.
And the more reputable the site is, the bigger the chances of you getting some of their reputation.
These sort of backlinks will help your brand become more trustworthy and authoritative and that will lead to…yes more conversions.
Quantity and Quality of Backlinks
“So how many backlinks do I need” you may wonder. It honestly depends. First and foremost your on-page factors need to be in place and your content must be optimized for your target keywords.
One important factor here is that the internal linking is in place as internal links both guide users and help search engines in understanding your website.
Another important factor is that you have to keep a good eye on what your competitors are doing (what do their link strategies and link profiles look like?).
I’m a big fan in general of looking for patterns, to try to understand what we could learn from your competitors.
Please note that this does not mean to copy your competitors but instead try to get inspired, to gather data points.
If your competitor has 10,000 backlinks, it doesn’t automatically mean you should try to get 10,100. You want to get the right type of backlinks.
Links that are relevant to your target audience and to your business. As with any form of digital marketing, link building is a long term strategy (especially in competitive niches).
So for link building to be really meaningful for you business (and lead to more sales), it’s all about the consistency.
I just can’t help myself using another plant example: you don’t just plant a little seed and take care of it and then think “no, it’s not going to work”. You have to put in the effort. Then you might end up with the coolest (and cutest!) little plant 🙂
You also want to aim for a natural link profile – you don’t want to send out spammy vibes! It’s all about that trust, remember 🙂
Trust and Credibility
Yes, speaking of trust – backlinks from reputable websites make your brand appear more trustworthy.
A bit of a side note: I saw a Linkedin post the other day where a knowledgeable person in digital PR predicted that one of the most important aspects of digital marketing for 2025 would be “Brand identity”.
I couldn’t agree more.
In relation to this, I would like to add that it’s also important to show a consistent brand identity across all channels, and have a good marketing mix. I’m a big fan of short video formats.
The cool thing here is also that if you are active on let’s say Tiktok or Youtube and producing relevant content for your target audience, this can help you guide them to your website, and when they are ready they may contact you in order to start a collaboration.
So a tailored people-oriented link building approach will help you move the needle and become that trustworthy expert.
Keep building and planting
Link building matters for your business as it helps establish your brand as credible and trustworthy. With quality and relevant backlinks you will not only get those solid links, you will build lasting relationships.
With a people-oriented approach a link building campaign will help boost your brand’s visibility, trustworthiness and conversion rate.
